Geographical Indication (GI)
- The word GI is an indication of the geographical location which indicates the product associated with a certain area or region. Actually, it has become a trademark of that region and the place becomes famous by the name of that product. It is used for agricultural, natural and manufactured goods having a special quality and established a reputation.
GI tags – a requirement of TRIPS agreement
- India, as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection)Act, 1999 has come into force with effect from 15th September 2003.
- Darjeeling Tea was the first Indian product to get the geographical indication tag. In 2004, the famous beverage got the recognition.
